In June 2018 the Cockleshell Pacific team will set off from Monterey, California, on a gruelling 2,400 race across the Pacific, arriving in Waikiki, Hawaii between 30 to 80 days later. Steve and Mick will complete against other ocean row boats of two and four crews from across the globe.
Each boat is only moved by the muscle of the crew pulling on the oars and carries no sails or engines. The teams will be completely unaided during the race, the duration of which depends entirely on the number of people in the crew, the quality of their preparation and the weather conditions they encounter on route.
The shortest route between the start and finish is a little over 2,400 miles but winds, waves, current and less than perfect steering mean that each boat will actually cover closer to 3,000 miles.
